Question

What is the ruling on the Jumuʿah prayer when it falls on the day of ʿĪd? Must it be held by all Muslims, or only by a particular group? I ask because some people believe that when ʿĪd falls on a Friday, there is then no Jumuʿah.

Answer

The imām of the Jumuʿah and its preacher must hold the Jumuʿah, attend the mosque, and lead in prayer whoever comes. The Prophet ﷺ used to hold it on the day of ʿĪd, praying both the ʿĪd and the Jumuʿah, ʿalayhi al-ṣalātu wa-l-salām. Sometimes he recited Sabbiḥ and al-Ghāshiyah in both the ʿĪd and the Jumuʿah, as al-Nuʿmān ibn Bashīr, raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhumā, said in what is established from him in the Ṣaḥīḥ. However, whoever attended the ʿĪd prayer may leave the Jumuʿah and pray ẓuhr at home, or with some of his brothers if they too attended the ʿĪd prayer. If he prays the Jumuʿah with the people, that is better and more complete. If he leaves the Jumuʿah prayer because he attended and prayed the ʿĪd, there is no blame on him, but he must pray ẓuhr, alone or in congregation. Allah is the One who grants success1.
