Whoever loses his wuḍūʾ during the prayer should break it off
Question
A reader from Riyadh writes: Someone began the prayer while he was in the first row, then a ḥadath [state of ritual impurity] occurred to him. He carried on with his prayer so as not to break it off and be forced to step across the rows behind him, unsettling them and spoiling the humility of those praying. What is the ruling on this?
Answer
We hope that Allah will pardon him. What is obligatory, when a person incurs a ḥadath during the prayer, or remembers that he is not in a state of ṭahārah [ritual purity], is that he break off his prayer, go and perform wuḍūʾ, then come back and pray whatever he can catch of the congregational prayer. As for the rows of those praying behind the imām, the sutrah [a barrier in front of one praying] of their imām is a sutrah for them, so there is no harm if he passes in front of them. While leaving the row he must move calmly and quietly, so as not to disturb those praying1.
