Question

I slept through the dawn prayer and did not wake up until mid-morning. Is it permissible for me to pray it when I wake up, or should I pray it at its own time?

Answer

If a person sleeps through a prayer and then wakes up, he prays it as soon as he wakes, together with its sunnah prayer, because the Prophet ﷺ said: Whoever sleeps through the prayer or forgets it, let him pray it when he remembers it; there is no expiation for it except that.

When the Prophet ﷺ slept through the dawn prayer during one of his campaigns, on one of his journeys, and they did not wake until the heat of the sun, he, ʿalayhi al-ṣalātu wa-l-salām, got up and ordered Bilāl, who gave the adhān. They performed wuḍūʾ for the prayer and prayed its sunnah. Then he gave the iqāmah [the second call, announcing that the prayer begins] and prayed it just as he used to pray it in its time, ʿalayhi al-ṣalātu wa-l-salām.
