The ruling on following the imām in each closing salām
Question
What about when the imām gives the salām to his right and the maʾmūms [those praying behind the imām] follow him, and then he gives the salām to his left and they follow him?
Answer
He is asking about the maʾmūms giving the salām along with the imām: after he gives the first, they give the first, and after the second, the second.
Answer
There is no harm in this; it is correct and does no harm. But the Sunnah, and the better and more fitting course, is for them to wait until he has given the second salām. They should not hasten when he gives the first; they should not give the salām until he has given the second, in keeping with the apparent sense of the ḥadīths and as a matter of following him completely.
If someone gives the first salām after the first and the second salām after the second, the prayer counts, and there is no blame or sin on him; but he has left what is better, more complete and more cautious.
So they should take their time and not hasten until the imām has given the second salām. Once he has given the second, they give the salām, because the Prophet ﷺ said: When he says the takbīr [saying “Allāhu akbar”], say the takbīr; when he bows, bow; and do not bow until he bows. So they take their time until he has given the second salām. This is the more cautious course and the more complete way of following. If someone gives the first salām after the first and the second after the second, we hope there is no blame on him, but he has left what is more cautious and better.
Question
There is a ḥadīth in Ṣaḥīḥ al-Bukhārī whose meaning indicates that if he gave the salām to his right after the imām, directly after the first salām, perhaps this salām… and even if he then incurred a ḥadath [state of ritual impurity], his prayer would be sound?
Answer
The scholars differ on this. Most of them say that the first suffices: once he has given the first salām, that is enough, and even if he incurs a ḥadath after it, his prayer counts. Some of the people of knowledge held that two taslīms [the closing salāms of the prayer] are required, so that he does not conclude the prayer or finish it except with the second salām.
On this view, if he incurs a ḥadath between the two taslīms, the prayer is invalidated and he must repeat it. This is the weightier view: the weightier view is that two taslīms are required, and he should not hasten. The majority hold that once he has given the first salām, it suffices, and the second is a sunnah, not obligatory in their view; the first is enough. But the weightier view, and the better one in light of the proofs, is that both are obligatory, being among the pillars of the prayer, which should be carefully observed. He also said: Pray as you have seen me pray.
May Allah grant success to all, and may Allah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muḥammad, his family and his Companions.
