Is it permissible to leave the witr prayer?
Question
Is it permissible to leave the sunnah of witr [the odd-numbered night prayer]? I have heard that the Messenger never left witr, whether travelling or at home. Please make the way clear for us.
Answer
Witr is an emphasised Sunnah, at home and when travelling. It is an emphasised Sunnah, and its minimum is one rakʿah, whether travelling or at home. But if someone leaves it, nothing is held against him. It is a nāfilah [voluntary prayer], a voluntary act, not an obligation. He used to pray witr on his camel, whereas he would pray the obligatory prayer only on the ground.
Witr, then, is one of the nawāfil [voluntary prayers], like the sunnah prayers of Ẓuhr, Maghrib, ʿIshāʾ and Fajr, and the sunnah of Jumuʿah: all of them are nawāfil. When a man asked him about the prayer, he taught him that it is five prayers. The man said, “Must I do anything besides them?” He said, “No, unless you do something voluntarily.” So that which ... the five prayers with the rawātib [the regular sunnah prayers before and after the obligatory ones], and witr, and ḍuḥā [the mid-morning prayer]: all of them are nawāfil, all of them voluntary.
