Question

To His Eminence, our father, Shaykh ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bāz, Grand Muftī of the Kingdom and Head of the Council of Senior Scholars and of the Department of Scholarly Research and Iftāʾ [issuing fatwas],

may Allah preserve him and help him to every good. Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. To proceed:

One of those attending one of the weekly lessons came to me with a question and asked me to put it to Your Eminence for a detailed answer. He says: From childhood I did not pray. I prayed at some of the times now and then, and missed most of them; I left the prayer out of ignorance and negligence. Some time after marrying I began to pray, and I still do, praise be to Allah. My wife was in the same state as I was. She now prays, and each day makes up as many of the missed prayers as she can, whereas I do not make up the prayers I have owed since the age of legal responsibility. We have disagreed over this: must we make up the prayers we missed, or is repentance enough? Please advise us — may Allah preserve you and reward you with good.

Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.

Answer

And upon you be peace, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. To proceed:

The Book and the authentic Sunnah from the Prophet ﷺ indicate that Islam wipes out what came before it, and that repentance wipes out what came before it. Allah, Glory be to Him, said: ﴿قُلْ يَا عِبَادِيَ الَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا عَلَى أَنْفُسِهِمْ لا تَقْنَطُوا مِنْ رَحْمَةِ اللَّهِ إِنَّ اللَّهَ يَغْفِرُ الذُّنُوبَ جَمِيعًا إِنَّهُ هُوَ الْغَفُورُ الرَّحِيمُ﴾ "Say: O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah. Indeed, Allah forgives all sins; it is He who is the Oft-Forgiving, the Most Merciful." [al-Zumar: 53]. The scholars, raḥimahum Allāh, are unanimously agreed that this noble āyah was revealed concerning those who repent, that it shows that Allah, Glory be to Him, forgives all sins for those who repent, and that they are not required to make up prayer, fasting or anything else. It is authentically reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: Islam wipes out what came before it, and repentance wipes out what came before it. Muslim recorded it in his Ṣaḥīḥ. It is also authentically reported that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: One who repents of a sin is like one who has no sin.

People embraced Islam on the day of the Conquest, and the Prophet ﷺ did not order them to make up any of the obligations of Islam they had abandoned. The same is true of the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ in the time of Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhumā. When many of the Arabs, from Banū Ḥanīfah and others, apostatised after the death of the Prophet ﷺ, and many of them then returned to Islam and repented to Allah, Glory be to Him, the Companions, raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhum, did not order them to make up the prayers and fasts they had abandoned. This is a matter of consensus among the scholars.

Allah is the Granter of success1.

Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.
