Question

In Yemen we have a sect called al-Makārimah who regularly combine the ẓuhr and ʿaṣr prayers, and this combining is done between the two times. What is the view of Islam on that? And what is the ʿaqīdah of al-Makārimah?

Answer

This is known of the Makārimah Shīʿah, the esoteric Shīʿah. It is also known of most kinds of Shīʿah that they combine ẓuhr with ʿaṣr and maghrib with ʿishāʾ. According to ahl al-sunnah wa-l-jamāʿah [the people of the Sunnah and of the united body of Muslims], this is an error and a mistake.

The Prophet ﷺ set the times and made them clear. When he had made clear the times of ẓuhr and ʿaṣr, and of maghrib and ʿishāʾ, he said: The prayer is between these two times. Jibrāʾīl taught him that..

The times are therefore fixed. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has made them clear: they are explained in the Book and the Sunnah, set out in the Noble Qurʾān and in the pure Sunnah from the Prophet — ʿalayhi al-ṣalātu wa-l-salām. Muslims must act on that and pray each prayer in its time: ẓuhr in its time, ʿaṣr in its time, maghrib in its time, ʿishāʾ in its time and fajr in its time. It is not permissible for them to follow the example of those who have opposed the command of Allah and introduced into the religion what Allah has not permitted, whether Shīʿah or others. Whoever is in contact with them should advise them and say to them: If you are Muslims, keep to the path of Islam and pray each prayer at its time.

As for al-Makārimah, we have been told that they follow the religion of the Bāṭiniyyah [the Esotericists], but conceal it. I asked some of their heads and leaders, and he refused to tell me. He said: We follow your religion and your way, and we have nothing that differs from you. So he could not explain to us anything of his ʿaqīdah.

But what is well known from the scholars who knew them is that they follow the religion of the Bāṭiniyyah, and the religion of the Rāfiḍah [the Rejecters, a Shīʿī sect] in venerating the Prophet's household, calling upon them besides Allah and worshipping them besides Allah: ʿAlī, al-Ḥasan, al-Ḥusayn and Fāṭimah. They call upon them besides Allah, seek their rescue, make vows to them and slaughter for them. That is what has reached us about the Rāfiḍah and those of the Bāṭiniyyah who resemble them.

But some of them dissemble. If it is the Muslims, he dissembles: he does not reveal it and keeps it hidden. Yet they may openly display some of their innovations, such as this bidʿah [innovation in the religion] of combining the two prayers without an excuse.

If it is for an excuse, as with a traveller, he may combine; there is no harm. The sick person combines because of an excuse; there is no harm.

Question

They also say in the adhān: "Come to the best of deeds"?

Answer

That too is a bidʿah. Their saying in the adhān "Come to the best of deeds", and their saying in the adhān "I bear witness that ʿAlī is the walī [ally] of Allah", is a bidʿah. It is not in the authentic adhān; it is a bidʿah they have added. The wording is as you have heard it, without this addition. This addition is false and has no basis.
