The ruling on women visiting graves
Question
.............?
Answer
ʿĀʾishah, raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā, visited her brother’s grave and said: “Had I been present with you, I would not have visited you”, because she had been away. The scholars said: This shows that if visiting were prescribed, she would not have said this — had I been present with you, I would not have visited you! She passed by him on her way to ḥajj, because he died near Makkah and was carried to Makkah and buried there. This was an ijtihād [independent juristic reasoning] on her part. The Prophet ﷺ cursed the women who visit. It has come in the ḥadīth of Abū Hurayrah, Ḥassān ibn Thābit and Ibn ʿAbbās that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ cursed the women who visit graves; in one wording, the women who frequently visit graves. From this the scholars took the prohibition of visiting graves, and that women should not visit them, because they are a source of temptation and have little patience. So it is part of Allah’s mercy that they have been prevented from it.
Question
Is there a set time for visiting?
The Shaykh: No, there is no set time for men; they visit by night and by day. There is no set time.
.............؟
