How is zakāh paid on women’s jewellery?
Question
How do we pay zakāh on women’s gold?
Answer
Zakāh is paid on it as it is paid on other wealth: a quarter of a tenth. On gold, a quarter of a tenth is paid even if it is worn. The correct view is that zakāh is due on it even if it is worn. If it reaches the niṣāb [the minimum amount on which zakāh is due], a quarter of a tenth of the value of the gold jewellery is paid: rings, necklaces, bracelets and so on. Its weight is determined in the market, and zakāh is paid according to its market value as ordinary gold.
This applies to gold and silver. As for anything else, such as diamonds and other kinds of jewellery that are not gold or silver, there is no zakāh at all on them if they are for wearing and not for sale or trade.
Question
Even if it is not intended for trade?
Answer
Even if it is not intended for trade. This is the correct view, the more correct of the scholars’ two views: zakāh is due on it if it reaches the niṣāb, which is twenty mithqāls [units of weight] of gold. That amount is eleven and three-sevenths pounds.
