Question

The letter before us, the last in this episode, has reached us from Muḥammad Kamāl Muḥammad, a listener working on contract, from the Arab Republic of Egypt. He asks: What is the amount of the zakāh of the individual, the soul, and when is it due? I think that by “the soul” he may mean the fiṭrah, or zakāt al-fiṭr [the obligatory charity at the end of Ramaḍān].

Answer

If the question means the zakāt al-fiṭr of Ramaḍān, its amount is a ṣāʿ [a measure of volume] of any staple food, of all staple foods alike: a ṣāʿ of burr [wheat], a ṣāʿ of barley, a ṣāʿ of dates, a ṣāʿ of whatever is the staple food of the country. It is four handfuls of average-sized hands, both full; that is the ṣāʿ. It is four mudds: the mudd [a measure of one double handful] is one handful of both hands full, and four of them make a ṣāʿ. By weight, the ṣāʿ is four hundred and eighty mithqāls [units of weight], and the mudd is one hundred and twenty mithqāls.

In short, the zakāh is one ṣāʿ only, of the country’s staple food. That is how the Prophet ﷺ commanded people to give in charity: a ṣāʿ of dates or a ṣāʿ of barley, and so on. The Prophet ﷺ made zakāt al-fiṭr obligatory on people as a ṣāʿ of dates or a ṣāʿ of barley, and so on. The Companions gave it out in the same way: a ṣāʿ of dates, a ṣāʿ of barley, a ṣāʿ of burr, a ṣāʿ of raisins, a ṣāʿ of food. This is what is obligatory on people, young and old, male and female, whether it is qamḥ [wheat], which is ḥinṭah [wheat], or anything else.

Some scholars said that half a ṣāʿ of ḥinṭah, that is, of burr, suffices, but that is the weaker view. The correct view is that a ṣāʿ is required of every staple food found in the country. Yes.
