Giving Zakāt al-Fiṭr in Money
Question
He asks: If someone who owes zakāt al-fiṭr [the obligatory charity at the end of Ramaḍān] wants to pay money instead of wheat, barley and the like, is that permissible or not?
Answer
One should not do this, no. The majority of scholars hold that it is to be given in food and not in money, because the Messenger ﷺ gave food, as did his Companions, and as did scholars generally, most of them. So money should not be given; rather, zakāt al-fiṭr must be given in food. This is what is obligatory.
