The ruling on yellowish or brownish discharge after becoming pure
Question
If a woman has nifās [postnatal bleeding], becomes pure within ten days, and then, four days later, sees ṣufrah [yellowish discharge] or kudrah [brownish discharge], does she stop praying? Or does she carry on and not count this ṣufrah as anything, given that it falls within the forty days?
Answer
If a woman sees purity after ten days of nifās, or after fifteen or twenty days in nifās, she is pure: she takes a ghusl, prays, and is lawful for her husband, even if only ten days have passed. If she has become completely pure, with white fluid, or she has put in a pad of cotton or the like and it has come out clean, she takes a ghusl, prays, fasts, and is lawful for her husband, even if only ten, fifteen or twenty days have passed. There is no harm in that.
The same applies to a menstruating woman. If her usual period is seven or eight days and she then sees purity after three or four days, she takes a ghusl and prays, and praise be to Allah. For in menstruation and nifās the bleeding increases and decreases, and runs longer and heavier.
As for when she sees ṣufrah after that, having become completely pure and then seen ṣufrah or kudrah, the correct view is that it is not taken into account. Umm ʿAṭiyyah, raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā, said: “We did not count kudrah and ṣufrah after purity as anything.” Some said: except at the time of the usual period, the time of nifās; but that is not a good view.
So the correct view is to take the report generally: ṣufrah and kudrah after purity count for nothing. She may pray and fast, and she treats ṣufrah and kudrah like urine: she cleans herself of it, performs istinjāʾ [washing the private parts after relieving oneself] for it, and that is sufficient.
