The ruling on a menstruating woman touching the Qurʾān
Question
We are students at a girls’ school. In the Qurʾān lesson the teacher tells us to recite the Qurʾān while we are excused, and we are too shy to tell him, so we recite out of consideration for that. Is this permissible? And if it is not, what should we do during the examination days if they fall while we are having our monthly period?
Answer
The scholars, may Allah have mercy on them, differed over whether a menstruating woman or a woman in nifās [postnatal bleeding] may recite the Noble Qurʾān. A group of scholars held that it is forbidden, treating both like one who is junub [in a state of major ritual impurity]. They said: It is established from the Prophet ﷺ that one who is junub does not recite the Qurʾān, because janābah [major ritual impurity] is a major ḥadath [state of ritual impurity], and menstruation is the same, and so is nifās. So, they said, neither the menstruating woman nor the woman in nifās should recite until they become pure. They also cited a ḥadīth narrated by al-Tirmidhī from Ibn ʿUmar, raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhumā, who said: “Neither the menstruating woman nor one who is junub should recite anything of the Qurʾān.”
Other scholars held that a menstruating woman and a woman in nifās may recite the Qurʾān from memory. Their condition lasts many days, so they cannot soundly be compared by analogy with one who is junub, whose condition is short: once he has finished his need, he is able to perform ghusl and recite, whereas the menstruating woman and the woman in nifās are not. They said of the earlier ḥadīth cited by those who forbid it that it is weak: the scholars declared it weak because it is narrated by Ismāʿīl ibn ʿAyyāsh from the people of the Ḥijāz, and his narration from them is weak.
This view is the correct one. A menstruating woman or a woman in nifās may therefore recite the Qurʾān from memory, because their condition lasts long, so comparing them with one who is junub is not correct. Accordingly, there is no harm in the student reciting the Qurʾān, and likewise the female teacher, in the examination and outside it, from memory, not from the muṣḥaf [written copy of the Qurʾān].
If, however, one of them needs to recite from the muṣḥaf, there is no blame on her, provided she does so through a barrier, such as gloves or the like1.
