How many times the head is wiped in wuḍūʾ: the correct view
Question
One scholar says that the head is wiped with water once, and another says three times. Which is correct?
Answer
The correct view is once. The Prophet, ʿalayhi al-ṣalātu wa-l-salām, used to wipe it a single time, beginning at the front of his head and going to his nape, then bringing them back to the place where he began. This is the Sunnah. As for what is reported in some narrations, that he wiped three times, it is weak and not soundly established from the Prophet ﷺ. What is preserved is a single wiping. That is how the sound ḥadīths from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ describe the wiping of the head: he wipes once. It is best that one begin at the front of the head, take one’s hands to the nape, then bring them back to the place where one began. May Allah grant everyone success.
