Question

I hope Your Eminence will explain to us the correct way of performing tayammum [dry ablution with clean earth].

Answer

Correct tayammum is as Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said: ﴿وَإِنْ كُنْتُمْ مَرْضَى أَوْ عَلَى سَفَرٍ أَوْ جَاءَ أَحَدٌ مِنْكُمْ مِنَ الْغَائِطِ أَوْ لامَسْتُمُ النِّسَاءَ فَلَمْ تَجِدُوا مَاءً فَتَيَمَّمُوا صَعِيدًا طَيِّبًا فَامْسَحُوا بِوُجُوهِكُمْ وَأَيْدِيكُمْ مِنْهُ﴾ "If you are ill, or on a journey, or one of you comes from relieving himself, or you have touched women, and you find no water, then seek clean earth and wipe your faces and hands with it" [al-Māʾidah: 6]. What is prescribed is a single strike for the face and the hands. It is done like this: he strikes the earth once with his hands, then wipes his face and hands with them. This is as reported in the two Ṣaḥīḥs [the collections of al-Bukhārī and Muslim]: the Prophet ﷺ said to ʿAmmār ibn Yāsir, raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhu: All you needed was to do this with your hands — then he struck the ground with his hands and wiped his face and hands with them.

The earth must be pure. Wiping the forearms is not prescribed; wiping the face and hands is enough, because of the ḥadīth just mentioned.

According to the correct view, tayammum takes the place of water in lifting the ḥadath [state of ritual impurity]. So once he has performed tayammum, he may pray with it voluntary prayers and obligatory prayers, both the present prayer and those to come, as long as he remains in a state of ṭahārah [ritual purity]: until he incurs a ḥadath, or finds water if he had none, or becomes able to use it if he was unable to. Tayammum is therefore ṭahūr [purifying], taking the place of water, as the Prophet ﷺ called it ṭahūr1.
