Question

How is wiping over socks done, and what are its conditions?

Answer

It is permissible to wipe over socks if they cover the feet and the ankles, just as it is permissible to wipe over khuffs [leather socks], provided that the socks and the khuffs were put on in a state of complete purity. The period is a day and a night for the resident, and three days and their nights for the traveller, counted from the first wiping after a ḥadath [state of ritual impurity]. This is because authentic ḥadīths establish from the Prophet ﷺ what indicates this.

س: المسح على الجوارب كيف يكون؟ وما هي شروطه؟

الجواب

ج: يجوز المسح على الجوربين إذا كانا ساترين للقدمين والكعبين، كما يجوز المسح على الخفين إذا لبس الجوربين والخفين على طهارة كاملة، يومًا وليلة للمقيم، وثلاثة أيام بلياليها للمسافر، بدءا من المسح الأول بعد الحدث؛ لأنه قد صح عن النبي ﷺ في الأحاديث الصحيحة ما يدل على ذلك.
