When the period for wiping over leather socks begins and ends
Question
Your Eminence, our Shaykh, we would like clarification of when wiping over the khuffs [leather socks] begins and when it ends. Is it from the first ḥadath [state of ritual impurity], or from the first time one wipes?
Answer
If he puts on khuffs that cover the feet while in a state of ritual purity, he wipes over them for a day and a night if he is resident, and for three days and their nights if he is travelling. According to a number of scholars, the period starts from the ḥadath after putting them on: once he incurs a ḥadath after putting them on, the period begins. The weightier view is that it starts with the wiping after the ḥadath: when he wipes after the ḥadath, that is the starting point. This is the weightiest of the views on the matter. For example, if he put them on at fajr in a state of purity, then perhaps incurred a ḥadath at mid-morning, and then wiped over them at ẓuhr, the period starts from ẓuhr. He continues praying in them and wiping over them until ẓuhr; when the following ẓuhr comes, he takes them off and performs wuḍūʾ, then puts them on until ẓuhr.
Likewise, if he put them on at ẓuhr in a state of purity, then incurred a ḥadath after ẓuhr, and then wiped over them at ʿaṣr, the starting point is ʿaṣr. He continues performing wuḍūʾ and wiping over them until ʿaṣr; when the next ʿaṣr comes, he takes them off and performs wuḍūʾ as for prayer, then puts them on if he wishes.
As for the traveller, it is three days and their nights: seventy-two hours after the wiping. Once he has wiped over them, seventy-two hours begin, three days and their nights, during which he wipes. That is if he finds water. If he does not find water, he may leave them on, even for many days. For instance, if he has nothing but tayammum [dry ablution with clean earth], he does not have to take them off for tayammum, because no wiping of the feet is involved, according to the correct view. Rather, this applies only when he finds water while travelling: he takes them off after three days and their nights, performs wuḍūʾ, washes his feet, and then puts them on once more if he wishes. But if he is on a long journey with no water, performing tayammum, there is no harm in their staying on his feet, even for weeks, as long as he is travelling and finds no water.
