Question

What is the sign of Laylat al-Qadr [the Night of Decree], and what is the Muslim’s duty on that night?

Answer

The Sunnah is to spend Laylat al-Qadr standing in prayer. It falls only within the last ten of Ramaḍān; its odd nights are more strongly indicated than the rest, and the most hoped-for of them is the night of the twenty-seventh. What is prescribed is to strive hard in obedience to Allah, Majestic and High, through the days and nights of the ten. Standing in prayer at night is not obligatory, only recommended, because the Prophet ﷺ used to strive in the last ten as he did at no other time. ʿĀʾishah, raḍiya Allāhu ʿanhā, said: "When the last ten began, the Prophet ﷺ would tighten his waist-wrap, keep his night awake, and wake his family"1.

Another reason is his saying ﷺ: Whoever stands in prayer on Laylat al-Qadr out of īmān and in hope of reward will have his past sins forgiven2. The ḥadīths on this are many. Allah is the Granter of success3.
