Eating and drinking during the fajr adhān in Ramaḍān
Question
His last question is: In the noble month of Ramaḍān, as the adhān of fajr begins, or while it is being called, is one allowed to drink water before the adhān has finished? May Allah grant you success.
Answer
If the fasting person does not know that the adhān is being called at dawn itself, but it is being called the way people call it, by estimation and by the clock and the calendar, then there is no harm in his drinking while the adhān is being called, or eating a morsel in his hand while it is being called. There is no harm in this, because the adhān announces dawn, the presumed time of dawn. The one calling it has not seen the dawn; he only announces what he knows by the clock or the calendar. Dawn may have broken, and it may not have. Allah, Majestic and High, made abstaining obligatory only once dawn becomes clear. So the believer should be cautious and finish his suḥūr [the pre-dawn meal] before fajr, before the adhān, so as not to fall into a doubtful matter. But if it happens that he eats a little with the adhān, or drinks while it is being called, then apparently there is no blame on him in that, provided he did not know that dawn had broken. Yes.
