What must someone do who masturbated during the day in Ramaḍān?
Question
The following letter reached the programme from a listener who signs himself (S. ʿ. al-Nabhān), of Khamīs Mushayṭ. In his letter and question he says: I would like to know what someone must do who deliberately masturbated during the day in the month of Ramaḍān. Does the saying of the noble Messenger ﷺ apply to him: Whoever breaks the fast deliberately, fasting for all time will not be accepted from him, even if he fasts it? Please advise us, may Allah benefit you.
Answer
First, masturbation is not permissible, whether in Ramaḍān or at any other time. It is forbidden and objectionable; according to the majority of scholars it is not permissible to do, because it contravenes His saying, Exalted is He: ﴿وَالَّذِينَ هُمْ لِفُرُوجِهِمْ حَافِظُونَ إِلَّا عَلَى أَزْوَاجِهِمْ أوْ مَا مَلَكَتْ أَيْمَانُهُمْ فَإِنَّهُمْ غَيْرُ مَلُومِينَ فَمَنِ ابْتَغَى وَرَاءَ ذَلِكَ فَأُوْلَئِكَ هُمُ الْعَادُونَ﴾ "And those who guard their private parts, except from their wives or those their right hands possess, for then they are not to be blamed. But whoever seeks beyond that, it is they who are the transgressors" [al-Muʾminūn: 5-7]. Masturbation is something other than going in to one's wife or to one whom one's right hand possesses. It is therefore frivolous, objectionable, and a transgression.
Second, besides being contrary to the Sharīʿah, it causes many harms. Physicians who are knowledgeable about this offence have firmly established that it does the one who masturbates a great deal of harm.
Third, whoever masturbated in Ramaḍān must make up the day. He must repent to Allah and make up that day, because he broke his fast on it through this masturbation. That is, he comes under the ruling of those who have broken the fast, even though he did not eat or drink. He comes under the ruling of those who have broken the fast, so he must make up the day.
Fourth, as for the ḥadīth "Whoever breaks the fast on a day in Ramaḍān, fasting for all time will not expiate it for him, even if he fasts it": according to the scholars it is a weak ḥadīth, muḍṭarib [inconsistent in its transmission], and not established. Even if it were established, its meaning according to the scholars would be a deterrent and a warning against breaking the fast without right. It does not mean that he does not make it up — no. Rather, it means deterring people from breaking the fast without right. The correct view is that it is muḍṭarib and not established. Whoever broke the fast by masturbation or by anything else must repent to Allah, feel remorse, and hasten to make up the day. He must make up what he owes, along with repentance and keeping to the straight path. He owes no expiation, for expiation applies specifically to someone who had intercourse in Ramaḍān. As for masturbation in Ramaḍān, or eating or drinking deliberately in Ramaḍān, this requires making up the day, repenting, and returning and turning in penitence to Allah; it does not require expiation. So understand, my brother, and beware. Yes.
