Question

This letter has come from Jeddah, Nazlat Banī Mālik. The sender, Muhalhil Suhayl al-Muṭayrī, says: On one of the days of blessed Ramaḍān this year, 1400, I felt a tightness in my chest because my nose was blocked, so I used nose drops for two days, and the drops went down into my throat. Is it permissible for me to make up those two days on which I used the drops, given that I did not break my fast before nightfall but kept to it? Please advise me, may Allah reward you, and may Allah grant you the best of rewards on our behalf and on behalf of the Muslims.

Answer

Whoever used drops until they reached his throat should make up the day, because many scholars hold that his fast is invalidated by that. So if the drops reach his throat, the more fitting and more cautious course for him is to make it up, to stay clear of the scholars’ disagreement. In a case like this, he should postpone the drops until night: if it is easy to postpone drops, kohl and medicine until night, that is better and more cautious. If he uses them during the day because of pressing need, there is no harm; but if the taste reaches his throat, he has broken his fast. If not, it is not broken: his fast is valid and he does not make it up. As for someone whose throat the taste of the drops reached, he makes the day up as a precaution and to stay clear of the scholars’ disagreement.
