Question

He also says in his letter: We notice, honoured Shaykh, that some people — school students in particular — swear by success, saying “By my success” or “By my tawfīq [success granted by Allah]”. Is this shirk? Please guide us, and give us sound direction on how to put an end to this habit, bearing in mind that it is widespread among many students. May Allah grant you success.

Answer

Swearing by other than Allah is one of the evils and one of the forbidden acts of shirk, and the Prophet made this clear, ʿalayhi al-ṣalātu wa-l-salām. At first people used to swear by their fathers: the Arabs swore by their fathers and their mothers. Later the Prophet ﷺ condemned that. He came upon some of the Companions in a riding party swearing by their fathers, so he forbade them and said: “Allah forbids you to swear by your fathers.” He said: “Whoever swears, let him swear by Allah or keep silent.” He said: “Do not swear by your fathers, your mothers or the andād [false equals set up beside Allah], and do not swear by Allah unless you are telling the truth.” He also said, ʿalayhi al-ṣalātu wa-l-salām: “Whoever swears by other than Allah has disbelieved, or has committed shirk.” He said: “Whoever swears by the trust is not one of us.” When Saʿd said: “O Messenger of Allah! I swore an oath and said in it: By al-Lāt and al-ʿUzzā [two idols of the pre-Islamic Arabs], he said to him: Say: (Lā ilāha illā Allāh [none has the right to be worshipped but Allah]) .......... seven times”. In some narrations: “Seek refuge with Allah from the Shayṭān.”

The point, then, is that swearing by other than Allah is an evil and one of the forbidden acts of shirk. It is not permissible to swear by one’s success, one’s father or mother, the life of so-and-so, the head of so-and-so, the Prophet, the Kaʿbah or the honour of so-and-so. All of these are evils and forbidden acts of shirk which no one may ever engage in. Whoever does any of this must hasten to repent of these forbidden acts of shirk — of lesser shirk, that is. It may even be major shirk: if veneration of the one sworn by takes hold in his heart, so that he venerates him as he venerates Allah, or if he believes that the one sworn by has some share of worship and of “the secret” [a hidden power], then it is major shirk — we ask Allah for well-being. But if it simply runs off his tongue without intention, out of habit, it is lesser shirk. One should therefore beware of this, and not swear by one’s father, mother, success, tawfīq or anything else. If, however, he says “By my tawfīq” meaning (by Allah’s granting me tawfīq) — his intention being Allah’s tawfīq — that is another matter, as in “I will succeed by Allah’s tawfīq”, or the like. But “By my tawfīq” intended as an oath is not permissible; rather, it is one of the forbidden acts of shirk.

In short, the Muslim must beware of the slips of the tongue, for they are many and grave, and this is one of them: swearing by other than Allah is one of the slips and banes of the tongue. Let him beware of it with the utmost care. If he sees someone doing it, he should censure him, teach him and advise him, telling him: This is not permissible; what is obligatory is to swear by Allah alone, Glory be to Him and Exalted is He. Yes.
