The ruling on going to soothsayers and astrologers
Question
Please answer regarding the soundness of the religion of someone who goes to soothsayers and astrologers and puts his īmān in what they say. They come out with things that seem true: for example, they tell a man the name of one of his relatives and describe his house to him, and they may even describe the wealth and children he has, and so on.
Answer
This existed in the time of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and before and after him. That is why the Prophet ﷺ forbade going to soothsayers and asking them. He said, ʿalayhi al-ṣalātu wa-l-salām: Whoever goes to a diviner and asks him about something, no prayer of his is accepted for forty nights — Muslim narrated it in his Ṣaḥīḥ. He ﷺ also said: Whoever goes to a soothsayer and believes what he says has disbelieved in what was sent down to Muḥammad ﷺ.
Some people asked him about going to soothsayers, and he said, ʿalayhi al-ṣalātu wa-l-salām: Do not go to them, for they are nothing. They said: O Messenger of Allah, they sometimes speak the truth? He said: That is a word which the devil from among the jinn hears from the heaven while eavesdropping. He drops it into the ear of his ally among humans, the soothsayer or sorcerer, who then speaks the truth in that word. But they lie, and add a hundred lies to it — in one narration: more than a hundred lies. Then people say: He spoke the truth on such-and-such a day, and that becomes a means of believing him in all his lies. Soothsayers have companions from the devils among the jinn; such a companion is called al-raʾiyy [the familiar spirit], meaning the companion from the jinn who tells him about some matters of the unseen and some of what happens in various lands. This was known in the jāhiliyyah [the pre-Islamic age of ignorance] and in Islam. The jinnī says to his companion among the sorcerers and soothsayers: Such-and-such happened in such-and-such a land on such-and-such a night. For the jinn, the devils among them included, pass news on to one another. Likewise, with tremendous speed, from all over the world. That is why someone who hears that they were right on some matters may be taken in by them.
They may also eavesdrop and hear some of what passes in the heaven among the angels, of what Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has spoken concerning the affairs of the people of the earth and what happens in it. When they hear that word, they drop it into the ears of their companions among the soothsayers, sorcerers and astrologers, who then say: Such-and-such will happen, and so on. Nor is he content with this; he adds a great many lies to it, to sell his wares and to take people's wealth unjustly through these events. Because of this, people believe soothsayers and astrologers and go to them. The sick cling to a spider's thread and grasp at anything, because of what they may have heard about them having been right about this or that.
It is therefore obligatory not to go to them, not to ask them and not to believe them, even supposing they were right about something. For the Messenger ﷺ forbade going to them and asking them, and forbade believing them. This is what is obligatory on everyone. In treating the sick, they should follow what Allah has prescribed: recitation, and permissible medicines known to physicians. These are the lawful means and remedies, and, if Allah wills, they make what Allah has forbidden unnecessary1.
