Performing ḥajj for someone else before performing it for oneself
Question
This letter is from Salmān al-Ṭāwī al-ʿAnazī, who also asks about ḥajj. He says: My wife has died without having performed the obligatory ḥajj. I want to perform ḥajj on her behalf, to fulfil it, except that I have not yet performed the obligatory ḥajj for myself. I do not know: is it permissible for me to appoint someone to perform ḥajj on her behalf? And is it permissible for me to appoint someone to perform ḥajj on my behalf? Please advise me, may Allah reward you.
Answer
As for his deceased wife, may Allah reward him with good if he appoints one of the trustworthy, upright people to perform ḥajj on her behalf. If he delays that until he has performed ḥajj for himself, and then performs it on her behalf, there is no harm. First he performs ḥajj for himself; he begins with himself. This is what is obligatory. Then, after that, he may perform ḥajj on her behalf if he wishes. If he would like to hasten her ḥajj by giving one of the trustworthy people money to perform it on her behalf, there is no harm. All of this is good.
