Answer

This expression is not appropriate, but it can be understood in a correct sense: urging people to take on the character that Allah’s attributes and names call for and entail. That applies to those attributes whose implications it is good for a creature to embody. It does not apply to the attributes particular to Allah, such as al-Khallāq [the Creator], al-Razzāq [the Provider], al-Ilāh [the One who is worshipped], and the like. A creature cannot possibly be characterised by these, nor may he claim them, and the same holds for names similar to them. What is meant is only those attributes whose implications Allah loves His servants to embody, such as knowledge, strength in the truth, mercy, forbearance, generosity, bounty, pardon, and the like. He, Glory be to Him, is All-Knowing and loves the learned; Strong, and loves the strong believer more than He loves the weak believer; Generous, and loves the generous; Merciful, and loves the merciful; Pardoning, and loves pardon; and so on. Yet what belongs to Allah, Glory be to Him, of these attributes and others is more perfect and greater than what belongs to the creature. Indeed, there is no comparison between the two, for there is nothing like Him, Glory be to Him, in His attributes and His acts, just as there is nothing like Him in His essence. All the creature can have is a share of the meanings of these attributes that befits and suits him, within the limit the Sharīʿah sets. If he went beyond the limit in generosity, he would become extravagant. If he went beyond the limit in mercy, he would suspend the ḥudūd [fixed punishments] and the taʿzīrāt [discretionary punishments] of the Sharīʿah. Likewise, if he exceeded the Sharīʿah’s limit in pardoning, he would be putting it where it does not belong. These examples point to others like them. The great scholar Ibn al-Qayyim, raḥimahu Allāh, stated this meaning explicitly in two of his books, ʿUddat al-Ṣābirīn and al-Wābil al-Ṣayyib, and he may have stated it elsewhere as well, such as in al-Madārij, Zād al-Maʿād, and others. Here is what he says in al-ʿUddah and al-Wābil. In al-ʿUddah, page 310, he says:

Question

From ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bāz to the honoured brother, may Allah preserve him and take him into His care.

Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. To proceed:

Your kind letter dated 23/3/1386 AH has arrived; may Allah bring you to His guidance. I have noted its question about what some preachers said in the Friday khuṭbah, urging people to be characterised by the attributes of Allah and to take on His character: can this be understood in an acceptable sense, and has anyone said it before, and so on.

“Since He, Glory be to Him, is in truth the Thankful, the most beloved of His creation to Him is the one who has the attribute of thankfulness, just as the most hateful of His creation to Him is the one who abandons it or has its opposite. This is how it is with His most beautiful names: the most beloved of His creation to Him is the one who has what they call for, and the most hateful of them to Him is the one who has their opposites. That is why He hates the disbeliever, the wrongdoer, the ignorant, the hard-hearted, the miser, the coward, the contemptible and the base. He, Glory be to Him, is Beautiful and loves beauty; All-Knowing and loves the learned; Merciful and loves those who show mercy; Beneficent and loves those who do good; Concealing and loves those who conceal; Able and blames incapacity. The strong believer is more beloved to Him than the weak believer. He is Pardoning and loves pardon; He is Witr [Single, Odd] and loves what is witr. Everything He loves is among the effects of His names and His attribute and of what they call for, and everything He hates is among what opposes and contradicts them.”

In al-Wābil al-Ṣayyib, page 43 of the ḥadīth collection, he says: “Bounty is among the attributes of the Lord, Majestic is His majesty. He gives and does not take; He feeds and is not fed. He is the most bountiful of the bountiful and the most generous of the generous. The most beloved of creation to Him is the one who has what His attributes call for. He is Generous and loves the generous among His servants; Knowing and loves the learned; Able and loves the brave; Beautiful and loves beauty.” End of quotation.

I hope that what we have mentioned is sufficient and of benefit. I ask Allah, Glory be to Him, to grant us all understanding of His religion and to fulfil what is due to Him; He is All-Hearing, Near. Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings1.
