Question

What is the ruling on listening to tapes of Islamic anāshīd [religious chants]?

Answer

Anāshīd vary. If they are sound, containing nothing but calls to good, reminders of good and of obedience to Allah and His Messenger, calls to protect the homelands from the schemes of enemies and to prepare against the enemies, and the like, then there is nothing wrong with them.

But if they contain anything else, such as calls to sin, the mixing of women with men, women uncovering themselves in men’s presence, or any corruption whatsoever, then it is not permissible to listen to them1.
